The Federal Government has announced that Nigeria’s civil service will stop using paper documents and fully switch to digital operations by December 31, 2025.
This move is part of an ongoing plan to modernize government operations and improve how public offices work across the country.
The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Dr. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, shared this update during a press briefing in Abuja as part of activities to mark the 2025 African Public Service Day and Civil Service Week.
She noted that the transition is being guided by the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan that began in 2021 and will end later this year.
According to her, the Office of the Head of Civil Service had already stopped relying on paper before she took office, and efforts are now focused on getting all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to follow the same path.
She mentioned that the Federal Ministry of Health recently launched its digital system, becoming the eleventh ministry to do so.
Other ministries are currently working on their own digital upgrades.
The government is also working with development partners to support the digital shift in some ministries, especially in areas that need extra funding or technical help.
Walson-Jack said the goal is to make sure every MDA in the country becomes paperless by the end of the year.
To support this change, the government has also taken steps to learn from other countries. A recent study trip to Singapore was carried out by Walson-Jack and 20 Heads of Service from different states.
The trip, supported by the United Nations Development Programme, was aimed at learning from Singapore’s experience in building an efficient and modern public service.
The idea behind the tour was to compare methods, learn new ways of doing things, and share knowledge between the federal and state levels in Nigeria.
It is part of a broader plan to make the civil service more effective and better prepared to serve the public using modern tools.
