China has reportedly hacked the email systems used by congressional staff on influential committees in the U.S. House of Representatives, as part of a large-scale cyber espionage campaign known as Salt Typhoon, according to a report by the Financial Times on Wednesday, citing sources familiar with the situation.
Reuters was unable to immediately verify the report, and the White House had no immediate comment.
The hacking affected email systems used by staffers on the House China Committee, as well as aides on the Foreign Affairs Committee, Intelligence Committee, and Armed Services Committee, the report indicated.
Salt Typhoon has emerged as one of the foremost concerns for American cybersecurity. U.S. officials alleged that the hacking group is engaged in activities beyond mere intelligence gathering; they claim it is prepositioning itself to potentially paralyse U.S. critical infrastructure in the event of a conflict with China.
Beijing has consistently denied any involvement in these intrusions, Starnews NG reports.
