The upcoming match in Naples has raised significant concerns among the Chelsea community, prompting the team to advise fans traveling to the Champions League game on Wednesday to “exercise extreme caution” after two supporters required hospital treatment.
Naples has a troubling history of away fans being targeted by Napoli ultras.
“The club is aware of an incident that occurred on Tuesday evening in Naples,” a Chelsea statement read.
“Two fans are currently receiving treatment in the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
The club reminds all supporters to remain extremely cautious while in the city and to heed the advice provided prior to this match.”
There has been no official information regarding the cause of the injuries at the moment.
Approximately 2,500 Chelsea supporters have tickets for the game, and fans are encouraged to gather in designated areas to travel to the stadium via shuttle bus with police escort.
In travel guidance issued earlier this month, Chelsea stated: “During UEFA competition matches, away fans have occasionally faced attacks in Naples.”
Supporters have been advised to avoid wandering around the city and to refrain from wearing club colors or any emblems that would identify them as Chelsea fans.
Liam Rosenior’s team needs a victory against Napoli at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona to secure a direct spot in the last 16 of the Champions League.
Meanwhile, their opponents, the reigning Serie A champions, are looking for a win to remain in the competition.
