The United States President, Donald Trump, has announced that Venezuelan President, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife have been captured and flown out of Venezuela following what he described as a large-scale United States military strike on the country.
Trump made the announcement early Saturday via a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating that the operation marked a major escalation in US action against Venezuela.
“The United States of America has successfully carried out a large-scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the Country,” Trump wrote.
He added that the operation was carried out “in conjunction with U.S. Law Enforcement” and disclosed that further details would be provided at a press briefing scheduled to hold later on Saturday at Mar-a-Lago.
The claim came amid reports of explosions and intense military activity in Caracas and other parts of Venezuela in the early hours of Saturday.
As of the time of filing this report, Venezuelan authorities had not confirmed the alleged capture of President Maduro. In reaction to the strikes, the Venezuelan government declared a national emergency, accusing the United States of military aggression and calling on citizens to resist what it described as an imperialist attack.
Developments remain ongoing as the United States Federal Aviation Administration announced a ban on US commercial flights operating in Venezuelan airspace, citing ongoing military activity. Venezuelan officials also condemned the strikes, alleging that both civilian and military targets were hit.
