On Monday, the Nigeria Police Force deployed tear gas to disperse protesters in the Maitama area of Abuja, causing confusion among the demonstrators.
The protest, organized by the Take-It-Back Movement and several civil society groups, was part of a series of nationwide demonstrations addressing key national issues.
What began as a peaceful gathering quickly descended into chaos when the police issued dispersal orders and began using tear gas to break up the protest. Many participants fled for cover as the situation escalated.
Protesters, including human rights advocate and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, carried placards reading “Stop the Repression” and “Let Us Breathe.” They marched through the Federal Capital Territory to highlight concerns about rising economic hardship, the alleged abuse of the Cybercrime Act, and the ongoing state of emergency in Rivers State.
Ahead of the protest, Juwon Sanyaolu, National Coordinator of the Take-It-Back Movement, stated that the demonstration was a stand against increasing authoritarianism and a call for immediate relief for Nigerians grappling with inflation and insecurity.
