BREAKING: Herdsmen reportedly launch attack as many feared dead in Benue

A violent assault by suspected herdsmen on Mtsewnem in Akondutyough village, located in the North Bank area of Makurdi, Benue State, has reportedly claimed several lives and left many others injured.

The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday around 3:00 a.m., caught residents off guard as they were asleep, sources in the area revealed.

Reacting to the development, prominent humanitarian and rights activist, Ukan Kurugh, expressed deep concern over the incident. In a statement shared online, Kurugh condemned the recurring violence, describing it as both alarming and tragic.

“At about 3:00 a.m., I got a devastating call, accompanied by horrifying videos and images, showing another suspected herdsmen attack,” he said.

“This time, it happened in North Bank, just under an hour’s drive from Makurdi town. These attackers operate freely and without fear, showing blatant disregard for the authority of both state and federal governments.”

He expressed solidarity with those affected by the violence, saying, “To the injured and bereaved families, we feel your pain. This sorrow is collective. We will continue to raise our voices, mourn with you, and demand justice.”

As of the time this report was filed, efforts to reach the spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command, Edet Udeme, for confirmation and comment had not been successful.
