Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has resigned from his role as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), ending a controversial tenure that began in August 2023. The former Kano State governor cited health concerns as the reason for his immediate resignation.
In a resignation letter submitted on Friday, Ganduje explained that he was stepping down to prioritize his personal well-being. However, insiders within the party suggest that the move may have been triggered by mounting internal tensions and unresolved allegations of financial impropriety.
Ganduje’s leadership of the APC came at a time of internal party divisions, and his time in office was marked by criticisms over alleged high-handedness and questionable financial practices. Notably, he faced backlash from some party members who accused him of imposing exorbitant fees on aspirants during the buildup to the Federal Capital Territory area council elections.
His resignation has sparked speculation of deeper political instability within the APC, especially as the party braces for the 2027 general elections. Although the party has yet to officially announce a successor, expectations are that an acting chairman will be named soon as part of a broader leadership reshuffle.
Political observers believe Ganduje’s exit could trigger a major realignment within the APC’s national leadership structure, as various interest groups within the party jostle for influence ahead of the next electoral cycle.
