An Ondo State High Court has sentenced an Ondo civil servant, Aminu Kamilu, to seven-year imprisonment with hard labour.
Kamilu is an accountant attached to the Ondo State Hospital Management Board.
He was said to have stolen the money in 2017 as an accountant with the General Hospital, Ikare.
Presiding Judge, Justice William Olamide, who gave the judgement, said Kamilu could not absolve himself as all evidence he presented to deny culpability in the allegation of stealing the government’s money did not hold water. Justice Olamide acquitted the second defendant, Azeez Musa, saying the convict single-handedly committed the offence.
He ordered the Ondo State government to restore other civil servants indicted in connection to the theft to their former positions.
Justice Olamide said the sentence would serve as a deterrent to other civil servants who might want to tamper with government money.
