Usman Wa’anganda, Chairman of Hong Local Government Area in Adamawa State, has revealed that Boko Haram insurgents have killed 17 people within his council area over the past two weeks.
Speaking to a group of journalists on Monday in Yola, Wa’anganda recounted that the latest attack took place on Saturday, April 26, 2025, in Kopre village, where no fewer than 10 hunters and Civilian Joint Task Force members were killed.
He explained that the insurgents, armed and riding motorcycles, stormed the village around 4:00 p.m., overpowering local defenders with superior weapons.
The chairman, who appeared visibly shaken, said the assault left several homes destroyed and further deepened the fear among villagers who have endured repeated attacks.
“Kopre is one of the communities that borders the Sambisa Forest, making it highly vulnerable to Boko Haram raids,” he said. “We rely solely on hunters for protection. There are no soldiers or security personnel stationed here. Even when we call for help, no assistance comes.”
While appreciating the Adamawa State Government’s support for local vigilantes, Wa’anganda stressed that much more was needed to stabilize the area.
“The current security arrangement is inadequate. I strongly urge the government to deploy a full battalion so that displaced residents can safely return to their homes and farms,” he appealed.
Kopre is the hometown of former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha. During Mustapha’s time in office, soldiers were stationed in nearby Garaha town, but they were withdrawn after he left office.
