Founder of the BEMORE Empowered Girls Foundation, Dr. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, has called on women scientists to embrace passion-driven mentorship as a tool for empowering the next generation of girls.
She made the call on Thursday while addressing members of the Organisation for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD), Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) chapter, during her first physical attendance as a newly inducted member.
Delivering a lecture titled “Developing Our Passion: Uplifting Young Girls in Nigeria – The BEMORE Perspective”, Dr. Anyanwu-Akeredolu stressed the importance of using personal experiences and skills to create lasting impact in the lives of young girls, especially those from underserved communities.
According to her, the BEMORE Foundation, established in 2017, has demonstrated that young girls, when exposed to the right training in ICT, solar technology and life skills, can break through limitations and take part in innovation.
“In a patriarchal society such as Nigeria, the role of the educated woman is vital,” she said. “We serve not only as role models but as torchbearers creating environments like BEMORE where girls are empowered to discover their worth, pursue knowledge, and take ownership of their future.”
Dr. Anyanwu-Akeredolu’s lecture also reflected her current research interest in applying solar energy in aquaculture systems, a focus she developed after earning her PhD. Her work aligns with OWSD’s goal of advancing women’s participation in science and technology across the Global South.
