The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun has decided not to participate in the local government election set for Saturday, February 22.
The party made its decision known in a letter dated February 17 and addressed to the Secretary of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC).
APC’s state Publicity Secretary, Alao Kamorudeen, signed the letter, which was obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Osogbo.
According to the APC, the decision is based on a Court of Appeal judgment delivered on February 10, which reinstated the party’s previously elected chairmen and councillors.
The ruling nullified an earlier Federal High Court judgment that had removed them from office.
APC stated that with this development, the local government seats were no longer vacant, making the upcoming election unnecessary.
The party, along with its candidates, formally withdrew from the poll through the letter to OSSIEC.
The situation has worsened tensions between APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
PDP has argued that the court ruling did not reinstate the APC officials, while APC insists that their officials have resumed their positions.
A clash between both parties erupted on Monday as they both laid claim to local government secretariats across Osun.
The police confirmed that six people lost their lives, and many others were injured during the violence.
