Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Agege and Orile-Agege came out in large numbers on Tuesday to protest the way candidates for the upcoming local government elections were selected.
The protesters called on President Bola Tinubu to stop what they described as the unfair control of the process by Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa.
The protest, which took place in Agege, followed an earlier demonstration held last week.
The APC members expressed anger over a list of candidates recently released by the party, rejecting the names and accusing Obasa of forcing his own people into key political positions.
Among those named on the list, according to the protesters, is a man who has been bedridden for months and another who had been disqualified in the past.
Chanting and carrying banners with strong messages against Obasa’s actions, the protesters said they had collected over 2,000 signatures from people in the community to show their rejection of the list.
They said they are not planning to leave the party, but are demanding a fair process where all voices are heard.
They claimed that the same issue had been going on for years, and some members had even faced arrests during past protests.
The APC members who took part in the protest insisted they remain loyal to President Tinubu and fully support him, but they want him to step in and stop Obasa from picking candidates without consulting the larger party base.
They also argued that Agege has many strong and capable individuals who deserve a fair chance to lead.
