APC Councillorship Aspirant, Four Others Killed In Benue

An attack on Okpomaju village in Otukpo Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State on Wednesday night resulted in the deaths of an All Progressives Congress (APC) councillorship aspirant, Amedu Agaba, and four others.

The violence, involving armed herdsmen and local residents, also left many injured and at least 10 people missing.

The crisis began earlier in the week when suspected herdsmen reportedly killed three residents after mistaking local hunters for enemies.

In response, the traditional ruler of Otukpo, Chief John Eimonye, called a peace meeting with Fulani leaders and community representatives.

However, despite initial talks, fresh violence erupted on Wednesday night when gunmen attacked, firing indiscriminately.

Residents of Okpomaju and nearby villages, including Odudaje, Amla, Emichi, Otukpo-Icho, and Otada, fled their homes to seek safety.

Bodies of the victims have been recovered, with burials already taking place.

Local Government Chairman Maxwell Ogiri confirmed the attack and stated that security forces had been deployed to restore order.

Benue State Deputy Governor, Dr. Samuel Ode, visited the affected area on Thursday to assess the situation and urge both sides to maintain peace.
