Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has flown back to Britain after a devastating car crash in Nigeria that resulted in the deaths of two of his close friends.
According to The Sun newspaper, the boxer arrived at London’s Stansted Airport in a private jet on Friday evening. His return follows the charging of the vehicle’s driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, with “dangerous driving causing death.” Kayode is scheduled to appear in court on January 20.
The incident occurred on a busy highway linking Lagos and Ibadan in southwest Nigeria on Monday, when the Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and his team members, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, collided with a stationary truck. Authorities reported that Ayodele and Ghami tragically died at the scene, while Joshua and Kayode sustained minor injuries.
Joshua was taken to the hospital following the accident and was discharged on Wednesday. Ghami served as Joshua’s long-time strength and conditioning coach, while Ayodele was his personal trainer, as noted by British media.
Reports indicate that Joshua, 36, returned to Britain ahead of the funerals for Ghami and Ayodele. The 2012 Olympic champion, who has family roots in Nigeria, had been on holiday in the country after his recent victory over Jake Paul in Miami on December 19.
