Dr. Cornelius Onuigbo, a medical professional at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) in Nnewi, has regained his freedom after being abducted by unidentified gunmen.
According PUNCH, the incident occurred on Tuesday as he returned home from work, with the assailants seizing him near his residence in Nnewi.
Dr. Onuigbo was released in the early hours of Thursday, ending two days in captivity. The details surrounding his release remain uncertain, including whether a ransom was involved or if he escaped.
The news of his safe return was confirmed by his colleagues in the Urology Department and Martina Onwuka, NAUTH’s Head of Corporate Affairs. The hospital staff celebrated his release with joy, offering prayers of gratitude for his safety.
A colleague from the Urology Department, who preferred to remain unnamed, expressed relief at his return but acknowledged the ordeal’s potential impact. “We are immensely thankful that he is back home. While we are unsure if any ransom was paid or if he was injured, we know such an experience is deeply traumatizing. The most important thing is that he is now safe with his family,” the colleague remarked.
Anambra State Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, also confirmed the development, stating that Dr. Onuigbo has been reunited with his loved ones.
