The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, has announced a major restructuring of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to improve intelligence gathering and security operations in the state.
As part of these changes, he ordered an immediate reorganisation of the CID and approved the creation of a political desk unit to monitor political activities.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated this in a press release on Tuesday. He explained that the new unit would conduct threat assessments, implement risk management strategies, and provide security advice for political campaigns and other sensitive events.
Ikenga noted that the decision followed a strategic meeting on March 29 with CID sectional heads to review emerging crime trends and enhance officers’ investigative abilities.
“As part of efforts to strengthen intelligence gathering and security operations, the commissioner directed an immediate reorganisation of the CID formation,” the statement read.
He further added, “The CP approved the establishment of a political desk unit within the department to monitor political developments, assess threats, manage risks, and provide security guidance for political campaigns and other critical events.”
To boost investigations, CP Orutugu also proposed acquiring modern forensic equipment. This, he said, would improve evidence analysis, suspect profiling, and crime scene investigations to meet global standards.
“The CID in Awka remains the top investigative unit of the command, playing a key role in maintaining law and order,” he said.
He assured that continuous engagement with CID leadership would help identify challenges and successes, improving police effectiveness in Anambra State.
CP Orutugu reaffirmed the command’s commitment to proactive policing, professionalism, and ensuring the safety of all residents.
