An officer of the Osun State Security Network Agency, also known as the Amotekun Corps, Lamidi Abiodun, was killed during an ambush by armed criminals in the Papa area of Iwo on Wednesday.
The attack also left Nurudeen Alowonle, a member of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), missing, while another VGN member, Alex Sola, suffered a gunshot wound to his leg.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Public Relations Officer of the Osun Amotekun Corps, Yusuf Idowu, the security operatives were responding to an emergency call from farmers in Papa village who reported an ongoing attack on their farmland.
The combined team of Amotekun and VGN operatives was ambushed by a group of armed assailants, allegedly led by a notorious criminal named Akeem Olofa. During the confrontation, Abiodun was killed. Although initial gunfire did not penetrate his body, he was fatally struck in the head with a machete.
While some operatives managed to escape, Alowonle has not been located as of the latest reports. Abiodun’s body has been transferred to a local mortuary, and the incident has been reported to the Iwo Police Divisional Headquarters.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the attack and are focused on apprehending those responsible for the ambush.
In its statement, the Amotekun Corps expressed its commitment to the security of Osun State’s citizens and urged residents to remain watchful and report any suspicious activity.
“We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family of Lamidi Abiodun and honor his brave sacrifice,” the statement concluded.
