Amnesty International has urged the Nigerian government to immediately investigate a fresh attack in Plateau State that left no fewer than 15 people dead.
According to the organisation, gunmen stormed several villages in Chakfem, Mangu Local Government Area, on Monday evening, killing residents and torching houses and other properties. The affected villages include Tim, Koppang, Mihidihin, Jiblang, Jilem, Jibin, and Manden.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers shot indiscriminately, killing those they encountered and forcing more than 200 residents to flee their communities.
In a statement, Amnesty International described the attack as yet another example of how rural communities in Plateau remain vulnerable to repeated, violent raids. It accused Nigerian authorities of failing in their responsibility to protect citizens from what it called “rampaging gunmen.”
“Failure to stop these attacks is costing people their lives and livelihoods. Without immediate action, many more lives may be lost,” the group warned.
The human rights body recalled that between December 2023 and February 2024, at least 1,336 people were killed in Plateau State, including 533 women and 263 children, while 29,554 people were displaced. It also noted that in April 2025, at least 51 people were killed in a separate assault in Bassa Local Government Area.
Amnesty International stressed that unless urgent steps are taken, the cycle of violence in Plateau State could continue to escalate.
