The Deji and Paramount Ruler of Akure Kingdom has announced the closure of all markets, stalls, and shops across Akure on Thursday, August 14, 2025, in observance of the annual Aheregbe Festival.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the monarch’s Chief Press Secretary, Adeyeye Michael, the directive is part of the age-long tradition of the festival, which holds significant cultural importance in the kingdom.
The statement stressed that no trading or shop openings will be allowed during the festival, urging residents, market women, and shop owners to strictly comply with the order.
“In view of the importance attached to the health sector, only pharmacy shops and patent medicine stores are exempted from the closure during the festival,” the statement added.
However, the palace clarified that the festival will not restrict human or vehicular movement within the city, assuring residents and travelers that daily activities outside trading will continue unhindered.
The Aheregbe Festival is one of Akure’s longstanding cultural celebrations, marked annually with rituals and customs aimed at preserving the traditions of the kingdom.
