The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has lauded the management of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Jabi, Abuja, for initiating an internal investigation into allegations that some medical personnel failed to promptly attend to an injured road accident victim brought in by a good Samaritan.
The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, expressed his appreciation in a statement released on Tuesday by the FRSC’s Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide.
The incident, earlier reported by AFRIPOST, involved a victim rescued from a traffic crash in Abuja and taken to the hospital, where concerns were raised about the hospital staff’s response.
Mohammed emphasized the critical role of swift and professional medical attention in saving the lives of crash victims. He urged hospitals nationwide to demonstrate greater responsiveness during emergencies, particularly in cases involving accident victims.
He decried the growing trend of hospitals turning away patients brought in by FRSC operatives or good Samaritans, calling such practices “unacceptable and dangerous.”
Referring to the National Road Traffic Regulations (2024), the Corps Marshal reminded healthcare institutions that rejecting accident victims is explicitly prohibited under the law, which also prescribes penalties for any negligence that hinders emergency medical response.
“We urge all healthcare providers to prioritize the treatment of accident victims and uphold the highest standards of professionalism to safeguard lives,” he said.
Mohammed reaffirmed FRSC’s commitment to collaborating with health institutions and stakeholders to strengthen road safety initiatives and emergency care services across the country.
“Together, through coordinated efforts, we can reduce road crash fatalities and enhance Nigeria’s emergency response system,” he added.
He also commended the good Samaritan who transported the injured individual to the hospital, encouraging more Nigerians to emulate such selfless actions in moments of crisis.
Meanwhile, Dr. Bioku Muftau, Head of Clinical Services at FMC Jabi, told reporters that the individuals featured in the viral video—including one with a head injury—received necessary medical care and were discharged the same day. He added that the hospital is thoroughly investigating the incident and pledged that any staff found culpable would face disciplinary action.
