The Association of Resident Doctors in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, has started a three-day warning strike on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, following the sudden dismissal of 127 health workers.
The decision was made on Monday during an emergency congress held at Asokoro District Hospital.
The doctors took this action after learning that the FCT Civil Service Commission removed the health workers last Friday, claiming they were ghost workers or had abandoned their jobs.
However, the doctors argued that these staff members, including nurses, pharmacists, laboratory scientists, and even some hospital managing directors, were still actively working before being unexpectedly sacked.
The president of the association, Dr. George Ebong, said the FCT Administration, led by Minister Nyesom Wike, must meet their demands within three days or face an indefinite strike that could lead to a total shutdown of hospitals in the capital.
Among their demands are the immediate reinstatement of the dismissed workers, payment of their April salaries, and the resignation of the FCT Civil Service Commission chairman, Emeka Ezeh.
According to the doctors, the hospitals cannot function without these workers, and the sudden stoppage of their salaries without prior notice shows unfair treatment.
They stressed that the health system will be at risk if the issue is not resolved quickly.
The doctors have set a deadline of Friday, May 9, 2025, to have their requests fulfilled or they will take further action, which may worsen the situation in the capital’s healthcare sector.
