The Abia State Government has made a move to take over majority control of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, aiming to improve electricity supply in the capital city, Umuahia, and nearby local government areas.
The plan involves acquiring 60 percent of EEDC’s assets, and the government says the talks have reached an advanced stage.
This information was shared after the latest State Executive Council meeting.
The Commissioner for Information explained that the government is also working on isolating eight local government areas in Abia Central and Abia North to strengthen the power supply in those areas.
Alongside this, Abia State has entered a new partnership with MTN Nigeria to bring digital development to the state.
The agreement covers several areas, including providing broadband internet throughout the state by the end of 2025, introducing 4G and 5G services in major cities like Aba, Umuahia, and Ohafia, and giving civil servants access to smartphones, laptops, and Wi-Fi through a device funding scheme.
The partnership also includes cloud computing for government operations, a digital marketplace for commerce and government services, and the creation of a digital mall.
