390 former members of Boko Haram graduated from the Federal Government’s De-radicalisation, Rehabilitation, and Reintegration (DRR) programme in Gombe State.
The ceremony took place in Malam Sidi, Kwami Local Government Area, and was part of ongoing efforts to reintegrate ex-insurgents back into society.
The graduates joined the camp in July 2024 and participated in a variety of rehabilitation activities, including vocational training and counselling.
The aim was to help them let go of their violent past and learn practical skills to support themselves and contribute positively to their communities.
Some of the skills they were trained in include tailoring, baking, welding, carpentry, electrical repairs, and laundry services.
Out of the 390 participants, 384 were Nigerians from different states, while six were foreign nationals from Cameroon, Chad, and Niger Republic.
They all went through the programme under Operation Safe Corridor, which is designed to handle the peaceful surrender and rehabilitation of ex-terrorists.
Security officials overseeing the programme urged the graduates to maintain the new path they have chosen and avoid going back to violence.
They were reminded of the promises they made to remain law-abiding citizens and to support peace in their communities.
To support their transition, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) distributed food items, essential supplies, and starter packs according to each participant’s area of training.
Each graduate also received ₦50,000 to help begin a new life after the programme.
The Federal Government, through this initiative, hopes to reduce insecurity and support long-term peace by giving former fighters a chance to live differently.
As part of a broader plan, more DRR centres are expected to open in other regions, including a newly proposed one in Zamfara State.
