27-year-old man beaten to death by hoodlums in Delta community

A 27-year-old labourer, identified as Mr. Joseph Anighoro Ikana, has reportedly been tortured to death by suspected hoodlums in Orogun community, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.

Ikana, who worked at the Federal Polytechnic, Orogun, was said to have been brutalized overnight on Thursday after being accused of selling an electric socket belonging to the institution. He reportedly coughed blood during the assault and died on Friday.

Eyewitnesses told newsmen that the hoodlums, acting without any police investigation, took the law into their own hands. Despite the allegations, the stolen sockets were not found in Ikana’s possession. His remains have since been deposited at the General Hospital morgue in Ughelli by the police.

The incident has sparked outrage among residents and rights advocates. The Senior Special Assistant to the Delta State Governor on Human Rights, Comrade Kelvin Ejumudo, condemned the act, describing it as “brutal and unjust.”

Ejumudo, in a statement on his Facebook page, demanded that the killers of Ikana be arrested and prosecuted. He also called on the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Orogun, the Chairman of Ughelli North Local Government, Olorogun Jaro Egbo, and the lawmaker representing Ughelli North Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Omonade Matthew, to ensure justice is served.

“This level of injustice will not be condoned. Everyone involved in this dastardly act must face the full weight of the law,” Ejumudo said.

He further appealed to the youths of Orogun to remain calm and allow the police to carry out a thorough investigation, warning against reprisal attacks.
