27 people drown in boat accident in Kwara

A tragic boat accident in Kwara State has resulted in the deaths of 27 passengers. The victims were returning from a market visit in neighboring Niger State when the boat capsized.

The incident took place three days ago at night and was reportedly caused by the boat being overloaded.

According to a survivor and eyewitnesses, the boat, which is meant to carry about 100 people, often ferries nearly 300 passengers during both dry and rainy seasons. Heavy storms and strong winds at the time also contributed to the disaster.

This incident comes just seven months after another deadly boat accident in Gbajibo community, Kaiama Local Government Area, where over 100 people lost their lives.

Kaiama Local Government Chairman, Abdullah Danladi, who visited the bereaved families, condemned the frequent occurrence of such accidents.

He revealed plans to establish a committee that will enforce strict rules on life jacket usage and prohibit night travel on local boats.

Meanwhile, the Emir of Kaiama, HRH Muazu Umar, promised to step up awareness campaigns to ensure that both passengers and boat operators comply with safety regulations for water transport.
