2027: Why We Adopted Tinubu — Adeleke, Osun PDP

In a move that has taken many by surprise, the Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), alongside Governor Ademola Adeleke, has formally endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for re-election in the 2027 presidential election.

This endorsement was contained in a communiqué dated July 21, 2025, and jointly signed by key political figures in the state, including Governor Adeleke, former Governor Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, and Senator Lere Oyewumi. The document followed what the signatories described as “extensive consultations” with stakeholders across the state.

According to the communiqué, the PDP in Osun State recognizes President Tinubu as a son of the soil, stating, “Osun State is the ancestral home of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which makes the President the son of Osun State. Therefore, the PDP in Osun State hereby adopts and endorses President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for re-election in the 2027 presidential election.”

The decision, the party said, was reached after rigorous consultations, debates, opinion surveys, and sampling of views from traditional rulers, civil servants, retirees, religious leaders, market men and women, and ordinary citizens across Osun’s major towns and rural communities.

The move comes amid rising speculation over Governor Adeleke’s possible defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), which the communiqué directly addressed. It clarified that the defection idea did not originate from the governor and that many APC members in the state opposed such a move.

While the PDP noted that many of its members were not in favour of Governor Adeleke’s defection, they expressed willingness to stand by him out of loyalty. “The majority of PDP members in Osun State are not happy about the idea of defection to APC, but only reluctantly agreed to follow Governor Adeleke to wherever he goes to show their love, support, and loyalty to his leadership,” the communiqué stated.

Despite the endorsement of President Tinubu, the Osun PDP reaffirmed its commitment to its own party, emphasizing its loyalty to Governor Adeleke’s leadership and his 2026 re-election bid on the PDP platform.

“The party reaffirms its adoption and endorsement of Governor Ademola Adeleke for re-election in the 2026 governorship election on the platform of the PDP,” the statement added, while also instructing that the governor and all members remain in the PDP.

The communiqué concluded by urging Governor Adeleke to remain focused on governance and to continue the implementation of his administration’s Five-Point Agenda for the development of the state.
