Senator Aliyu Wamakko has denied claims that he is planning to contest for the position of vice president in the 2027 general election.
Wamakko, who represents Sokoto North Senatorial District and once served as governor of Sokoto State, said he has never expressed such interest.
The denial followed a report credited to the Chairman of Kebbe Local Government Area, Abdullahi Yerima, suggesting that Wamakko had such ambitions.
Wamakko’s media team issued a statement to dismiss the claim, saying it was not authorised and has no basis.
According to the statement, the senator has not made any private or public declaration to contest for the vice-presidential position or any similar political role ahead of the 2027 election.
The claim came amid ongoing rumours of a power tussle within the All Progressives Congress, particularly regarding Vice President Kashim Shettima’s political future.
A recent gathering of North-East APC leaders sparked further speculation after President Bola Tinubu received backing for 2027 while Shettima was not mentioned.
Following that development, reports spread that the North-West may be working to produce a replacement candidate for the vice-presidency, with Wamakko’s name being dragged into the mix.
However, Wamakko made it clear through his spokesperson that he is not involved in any such moves. He described the local government chairman’s comment as misleading and wrong.
His team also asked for a retraction and apology, saying Wamakko remains focused on his duty to Sokoto State and does not wish to be involved in unnecessary political games.
They also faulted the media outlet that carried the story without verifying its authenticity.
