The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Kebbi State has announced the commencement of Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) ahead of the 2027 general elections, with strong warnings against underage and multiple registrations.
Speaking during a press briefing in Birnin Kebbi, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Abubakar Dambo Sarkin Pawa, disclosed that the online registration portal will open on August 18, 2025, while in-person registration will commence on August 25, 2025, across all designated registration centres in the state on working days.
Sarkin Pawa urged eligible citizens, especially those who recently turned 18, to seize the opportunity to register and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), noting that the exercise will cover new registrants as well as those seeking replacements for lost, damaged, or defaced PVCs.
He emphasized that multiple registrations and underage registration are criminal offences that will attract legal consequences. “INEC will not tolerate any violation of the electoral laws. We urge community leaders, parents, and guardians to educate the public on the importance of genuine participation,” he warned.
According to the REC, over two million voters were registered in Kebbi State during the 2023 general elections, and more than 80 percent of PVCs were successfully collected by their rightful owners. However, he noted that a small number of unclaimed cards still remain at INEC offices.
He further clarified that the ongoing registration exercise will also cater to individuals who have relocated and wish to transfer their voting location to a new area of residence.
INEC urged political stakeholders, civil society groups, and the media to assist in sensitizing the public and ensuring that the voter registration process is transparent, credible, and peaceful.
The registration exercise is part of INEC’s broader efforts to expand the voter base and ensure an inclusive electoral process ahead of the 2027 polls.
