The Minister of Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, has warned that the All Progressives Congress may weaken its chances in the 2027 general election if it removes a Northern Muslim from President Bola Tinubu’s re-election ticket.
Musawa made this statement during an interview on Mic On Show, hosted by journalist Seun Okinbaloye, amid reports that the ruling party might consider changing the Muslim-Muslim ticket used in the last election.
She said removing Vice President Kashim Shettima or replacing him with a non-Northern Muslim would create serious political problems for the party, especially in key northern states.
According to her, having no Hausa, Fulani or Kanuri Muslim on the ticket would become a major setback, stressing that this reflects how many people in the region think about politics.
Musawa explained that politics in Northern Nigeria is deep and well understood, adding that people in states such as Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Kebbi, Jigawa, Zamfara and Sokoto take elections very seriously and value their voting power.
She dismissed claims that the APC could easily change its ticket without consequences, saying such views show a lack of understanding of northern politics.
The minister also spoke about the growing opposition alliances, saying she does not believe they can defeat President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima in 2027.
She described the opposition as divided, with many politicians struggling for leadership, which she said could weaken their chances.
Musawa said while the APC does not underestimate any opponent, the party remains confident of winning the next election.
She added that although strong opposition is good for democracy, the ruling party is focused on strengthening its support base ahead of 2027.
