2023: Kanu Nwankwo Disowns Tinubu, urges Nigerians to vote for best candidate

A former Super Eagles player, Kanu Nwankwo seems to have made a U-turn in his support for the ex-Governor of Lagos State and Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, ahead of the 2023 general elections in Nigeria.

In a fresh video posted hours ago on his verified handle, the football Legend who had visited Tinubu last year with his former teammates at his Bourdillon, Ikoyi residence in a show of support and solidarity during Tinubu’s 70th birthday, told Nigerians to get their PVCs and vote for their choices.

He said, “Hello my country people. I am not a politician. I am a footballer. Stop spreading fake news in my name. Stop spreading fake news in my name that I asked you to vote for who and who. I don’t do such. All my life is about football.

“That’s my field which I am proud of. This is the last time, stop spreading fake wicked news against papilo. I am here to help people. Don’t destroy what you cannot destroy.

“I am Papilo Nwanko. You know what is right. Go and get your PVC. PVC all the way, make your choice and vote for the best. You know who is the best. Vote so that Nigeria will be better. All of you talking about that I said.. no, I didn’t say anything, go and vote. God bless you.”

Last year, Starnews Nigeria reports that Kanu’s pictures of his visit to Tinubu triggered a backlash on social media as many cast aspersions on him and other former players.

But Kanu defended his association with Tinubu, recalling how the politician showed generosity to him 22 years ago.

He said, “A lot of people have been talking; all the same, we all are entitled to our opinions. Of course, we have to talk. I’m not a politician; I’m a footballer and a proud one at that. I’m a legend who knows what is good and what is not.”

“22 years ago when Kanu Heart Foundation was looking for people to support and help us touch lives, we got only three governors and Ahmed Tinubu was among them. He gave the foundation money; he supported us and now it”s his 70th birthday, and we have to be there to support him. We have a novelty game to play for him.”
