As the world marks World Health Day 2025, Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for urgent investment in maternal and newborn health to curb preventable deaths.
In a statement released Monday by her media aide, Busola Kukoyi, Oluremi described maternal and infant wellbeing as essential to the nation’s development, aligning with the year’s theme, “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures.”
“Each day, women and newborns die from causes that are entirely preventable. No woman should face death in childbirth, and every baby deserves a chance to live,” she said.
She urged stakeholders at all levels to prioritise safe motherhood and infant care as a shared responsibility. According to her, access to quality healthcare before, during, and after childbirth should be a national priority.
The First Lady also praised health workers for their continued sacrifice and commitment to saving lives.
“As we observe this day, I celebrate our healthcare workers who give their best daily. Let us keep working toward a Nigeria where all children grow up healthy and every mother survives childbirth,” she added.
World Health Day is observed annually on April 7 to raise awareness on global health issues and promote action for healthier societies.
