Senior lawyer Afe Babalola has said the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) should be allowed to carry arms while performing their duties.
He spoke on Wednesday during a visit from the Ekiti State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Sanya Adeoye.
Babalola said the safety of FRSC staff and their offices must be taken seriously, especially with the kind of risks they face on the roads.
He explained that their work goes beyond directing traffic, and they should have what they need to protect themselves and others.
He believes that giving them arms would help them work more effectively and safely.
During the meeting, Babalola assured the commander that he would keep supporting the road safety agency in every way he can.
He also expressed concern about the challenges FRSC officers face in dangerous situations and called for better security measures.
After the visit, FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed reacted to Babalola’s comments.
He welcomed the suggestion and described it as a much-needed move.
According to him, arming the officers would help the agency improve its performance and make roads safer for everyone.
He added that once the law allowing FRSC to carry arms is approved and signed by President Bola Tinubu, the Corps will be better prepared to handle its duties.
