The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency arrested approximately 2,200 undocumented migrants on Tuesday, marking the largest single-day enforcement operation in the country’s history.
According to NBC News, the surge in arrests reflects the Trump administration’s intensified efforts to crack down on illegal immigration, following increased pressure from the White House.
Many of those detained have been enrolled in ICE’s Alternative to Detention programme, which allows certain non-threatening individuals to remain under supervision through ankle monitors, smartphone applications, or other geolocation technologies.
While the report did not specify whether Nigerians were among those apprehended, inquiries by Punch Diaspora Tales with immigration experts and Nigerian community members in the U.S. had yet to yield any comments at the time of reporting.
