President Bola Tinubu has officially sworn in Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The brief swearing-in ceremony took place at exactly 1:50 p.m. on Thursday inside the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
While administering the oath of office, President Tinubu charged Professor Amupitan to safeguard the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system and strengthen the institutional capacity of the commission.
He urged the new INEC helmsman to ensure that future elections are transparent, credible, and reflective of the people’s will, noting that public confidence in the electoral process must not be compromised under his watch.
Amupitan’s inauguration comes a week after the Senate confirmed his appointment as INEC Chairman following a rigorous screening exercise held on October 16.
Until his appointment, Professor Amupitan was a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and a respected academic known for his expertise in constitutional and electoral law.
His emergence follows the end of the tenure of his predecessor, marking the beginning of a new phase for the electoral body ahead of forthcoming elections.
