Authorities in Bauchi State have detained three police officers in connection with the death of a suspect, Abubakar Auwal, who died under suspicious circumstances while in custody at a divisional police station in Jega.
The incident has also prompted the immediate redeployment of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) overseeing the station.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the spokesperson for the Bauchi State Police Command, SP Nafiu Abubakar, confirmed that Auwal was arrested on April 15, 2025, over an alleged case of stolen trailer rims.
According to the police, Auwal collapsed unexpectedly the following morning, April 16, while still in detention. He was rushed to the General Hospital in Jega, where he was later pronounced dead at around 10:00 p.m.
In response, Commissioner of Police Bello Sani directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
“Preliminary findings have led to the detention of three officers suspected to be involved in the case. The DPO has also been queried and reassigned,” the statement read.
Although the identities of the detained officers have not been disclosed, the command assured the public that a full-scale investigation is in progress.
The Bauchi State Police Command emphasized its commitment to upholding professionalism and ensuring accountability within its ranks.
