Outgoing Senators, Reps, aides to get N30.2b severance allowances
Senators and members of the House of Representatives will be sharing a total of N30.2 billion as severance allowance when the 9th National Assembly winds down next month, according to an investigation conducted by The Nation. Severance package or gratuity is money paid to lawmakers and their aides at the end of their four-year tenure. The amount in question is already captured in the 2023 Appropriation Act passed by the National Assembly and assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari. It represents 12.6 per cent of the N238.78 billion allocated to the National Assembly in the N21.8 trillion 2023 Appropriation Act.

The House of Representatives, on Wednesday, exhibited its disdain for made-in Nigeria products as it refused to patronise locally made vehicles for members’ oversight. Investigations by SUNDAY PUNCH on Saturday revealed that members of the 9th National Assembly were still expecting their welcome package about one month after their inauguration. The money, which has been conservatively put at between N65m and N70m for each lawmaker, is meant for their accommodation, personal vehicles, quarterly allowances and others for furniture and wardrobe.
