The Nigerian Senate has approved the Federal Medical Centre Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024, paving the way for the establishment of a Federal Medical Centre in Kafanchan, Southern Kaduna.
The bill, championed by Senator Sunday Marshall Katung of Kaduna South, is expected to improve healthcare accessibility in the region, which has long faced challenges in accessing specialized medical services.
Senator Katung noted that the new FMC will reduce the need for residents to travel long distances for medical treatment, a situation that often results in delayed care and avoidable fatalities. He expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and other lawmakers for their support.
He described the development as a significant stride toward achieving fairness in federal healthcare distribution, stating that the centre will not only address medical needs but also stimulate economic activity in Southern Kaduna.
In addition to creating both direct and indirect jobs, the medical centre is projected to attract healthcare professionals, foster research and training, and enhance overall public health outcomes.
The Senate’s passage of the bill is seen as a foundational move towards the operational commencement of the facility.
