The House of Representatives has summoned the governors of Benue and Zamfara, along with the leaders of their state Houses of Assembly, to appear before the Committee on Public Petitions on Thursday, May 8, 2025.
This action follows a petition by the civil rights group, Guardians of Democracy and Rule of Law, which has called for the federal legislature to take over the legislative duties of both state assemblies, citing concerns about failures in governance and constitutional compliance.
Chooks Oko, the Committee’s Head of Media, announced the summons on May 2, 2025.
The Chairman of the committee, Hon. Mike Etaba, who signed the invitation, made it clear that the invited officials are aware of the allegations against them.
The hearing will give them an opportunity to present their defence before any further actions are taken.
The committee’s mandate is to ensure that the rule of law is upheld across the country.
The parties involved will have the chance to clarify the issues, helping the public understand the situation.
The committee has stated that it will not allow any chaos to disrupt the democratic process.
