The Enugu State Police Command has arrested 10 suspects linked to a major child trafficking network, with one suspect confessing to purchasing two children for a combined sum of N2.3 million.
Police spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe, in a statement released on Saturday, said the arrests were made following a series of coordinated operations conducted between June 30 and July 16, 2025.
He confirmed that the suspects were involved in both local and cross-border trafficking activities.
Six children who were either stolen or trafficked were rescued during the operations.
Among them were a 14-year-old girl trafficked to Ghana and a one-year-seven-month-old boy.
Ndukwe revealed that on July 15, 2025, around 9:30 p.m., officers from the Command’s Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad, in collaboration with members of the Neighbourhood Watch, arrested 64-year-old Chiaha Josephine and 67-year-old Ozomma Christopher Ubanagum in Ezeagu Local Government Area.
Two trafficked children were rescued during the operation: 16-year-old Loveth Mfonobong and 12-year-old Benjamin Alex Okon.
According to police, Josephine admitted to buying Loveth in 2021 for N900,000 and Benjamin in 2024 for N1.4 million.
The statement added that the suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations, while efforts are ongoing to track down other fleeing members of the trafficking syndicates.
