Mr Banji Okunomo, Gubernatorial Aspirant of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State ahead of 2020 governorship election, has hailed the Judiciary for upholding the santicty of its existence as the last hope of common man following the declaration of Senator Ademola Adeleke, Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of last year’s governorship election in Osun- State by the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal

In a telephone interview with Starnews on Friday, Okunomo described Adeleke’s victory at the Tribunal as victory for democracy.

The full statement reads:

“I want to commend the Judiciary for upholding the santicty of its existence as the third arm of government which is the last hope of common man.

“The Judiciary has proved today that it remains and will remain the last hope of the common man.

“The only way our democracy can survive this trying period of monumental subversion and subrogation of democratic order by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) via all manners of threat to the institution of government is for the Judiciary not to allow itself to be used against the people

“The victory of Senator Ademola Adeleke at the Tribunal today in Osun-State is undoubtedly a victory for democracy.

“I therefore wish to join all Nigerians to congratulate another hero of democracy in person of Senator Adeleke who refused to be intimidated in pursuit of the restoration of the stolen mandate bestowed on him by the people of Osun-State.

“Very soon, we know the Judiciary will also dispense justice in the case of Ahaji Atiku Abubakar against the declaration of president Muhammadu Buhari as the winner of the just concluded 2019 presidential election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“I give kudos to the Judiciary in Nigeria for restoring the stolen mandate of the good people of Osun state which was expressively bestowed on the candidate of the PDP in the last governorship election in the state,” the statement added

An hour ago, the Osun-state governorship election pet‎ition tribunal has declared Ademola Adeleke, governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as winner of the Osun state governorship election.

At its sitting in Abuja on Friday, it held that the rerun election conducted in the state after the initial poll was illegal.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had announced Gboyega Oyetola as winner of the September 2018 election.

But the PDP and Adeleke filed a petition at the tribunal challenging Oyetola’s victory.

A three-man panel of the tribunal led by Ibrahim Sirajo, a judge, held that Oyetola was not validly returned as the winner of the election.
