Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has praised the resignation of the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, following the controversy over discrepancies in his academic certificates.
Nnaji resigned earlier this week after an investigative report alleged that he submitted forged academic and NYSC certificates during his ministerial screening. Obi described the minister’s decision as a decent and honourable step that promotes integrity and accountability in governance.
In a statement on his X handle, Obi urged the Independent National Electoral Commission and relevant agencies to begin thorough verification of the academic and professional certificates of all political candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He emphasised that the process should apply to every elective position, from the presidency to local government levels, stressing that dishonesty and forgery must have no place in leadership. Obi also called for a nationwide review of the qualification and background verification system for public office holders.
According to him, transparency and accountability must form the foundation of leadership in Nigeria if the nation truly desires credible elections and a government built on honour rather than deceit.
