The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has dismissed reports claiming that the Nigerian government has begun extradition proceedings against Simon Ekpa, a factional leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In a statement released on Friday by his Special Assistant on Communication and Publicity, Kamarudeen Ogundele, Fagbemi said the reports were misleading and did not reflect what he actually said during a stakeholders’ meeting held on Thursday in Abuja.
According to the statement, the Attorney-General clarified that the Nigerian government has not started any formal extradition process against Ekpa. Instead, he said Nigeria has been in communication with Finnish authorities to ensure that Ekpa, who is currently facing trial in Finland, is held accountable for his actions.
He explained that since Ekpa’s alleged crimes cross national borders, the Nigerian government is closely watching the outcome of the trial in Finland before deciding on further steps.
Fagbemi also urged the media to report responsibly and avoid spreading false or speculative information regarding sensitive legal matters.
