A drama unfolded at the Federal High Court in Akure, Ondo State, when the New Nigeria Peoples’ Party (NNPP) distanced itself from a lawsuit filed by its candidate, Olugbenga Edema.
The suit sought to have the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) remove Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and his deputy, Olayide Adelami, from the list of All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates.
NNPP’s National Legal Adviser, Robert Hon, clarified that the party did not authorize any legal action against the APC candidates.
He requested that the party’s name be removed from the lawsuit.
Edema had sought a judicial review of the eligibility of the APC candidates under Nigeria’s constitution.
As the case was being heard, Aiyedatiwa, Adelami, and other defendants, including INEC, asked the court to dismiss the case for lack of jurisdiction, arguing that the plaintiffs had no standing to file the suit.
NNPP’s legal team presented a letter from the party that confirmed their disassociation from the action.
The court proceedings were adjourned to February 3, 2025, after Edema’s legal team requested more time to review the new developments in the case.
