Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, has granted pardon to six inmates in commemoration of Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the governor said the decision followed the recommendations of the state’s Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy and was in line with his constitutional powers.
Fintiri explained that the beneficiaries had demonstrated significant improvement in their behaviour and conduct during their incarceration.
“Therefore, in the exercise of my prerogative of mercy as enshrined in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and in line with the recommendations of the Adamawa State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, I have granted pardon to six persons who have served various jail terms and have significantly demonstrated good conduct over the years,” the statement read.
Those released include Wamari Godwin, Abraham Marksunil, David Paul, Ibrahim Adamu, Usman Inuwa and Sani Yahaya.
The governor directed that the inmates be discharged immediately and urged them to reintegrate positively into society.
Nigeria marks Independence Day every October 1 to commemorate its liberation from British colonial rule in 1960. This year’s celebration, however, was observed without the traditional military parade, which the Federal Government cancelled.
