The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has disclosed that a significant number of inmates in correctional centres across the country have been successfully enrolled in the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) database.
As of June 7, 2025, a total of 59,786 out of 80,879 inmates—about 74 percent—have been registered, according to a statement released on Sunday by the NCoS spokesperson, Deputy Comptroller of Corrections Umar Abubakar.
Abubakar addressed reports suggesting that the National Identity Number (NIN) registration process had stalled in prisons, describing such claims as inaccurate and misleading.
He clarified that the enrolment exercise remains active and is being carried out in partnership with the NIMC.
“Contrary to recent reports, the registration process is ongoing and has recorded substantial progress through coordinated efforts between our Service and the NIMC,” he said.
Abubakar further noted that the remaining inmates are being registered gradually and that mechanisms are in place to ensure uninterrupted continuation of the enrolment process.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the NCoS to achieving full integration of inmates into the national identity system.
