The National Association of Nigerian Students – Diaspora (NANS-D) has officially informed key government officials, including the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, about the expiration of the tenure of the Juwon Fayomi-led executive.
In a statement released yesterday, Chibuike Divine, the Chairman of the NANS-D Electoral Committee, revealed that the executive’s tenure ended in March 2025, with no elections held to elect new leaders for the association.
Divine further explained that the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Suwaiba Ahmad, had been advised against recognizing anyone claiming to be the President of NANS-D, as efforts were underway to elect new executives.
The statement highlighted: “It is important to note that the tenure of the previous administration, led by Juwon Chris Fayomi, officially ended in March. According to our constitution, which mandates a one-term presidency aligned with rotational and zoning arrangements (Article 11, Sections c and k), the leadership has expired.”
“Reliable information suggests that Fayomi and a few others are still presenting themselves as leaders of NANS-D under the pretense of representing Nigerian students abroad. This behavior is not only condemnable but undermines the authority of our constitution (Article 3, Chapter I).”
The statement concluded by urging NiDCOM Chairperson, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar, Dr. Suwaiba Ahmed, and other relevant officials to refrain from engaging with these individuals, as they no longer represent the interests of Nigerian students overseas.
