  • Describes Buhari’s statement as sacrilegious

A former Senator, Dino Melaye, on Wednesday, attacked President Muhammadu Buhari over a statement credited to him where he urged the Governors elected on the platform of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) to support him choose a successor.

Reacting to the comment through a viral video on his Facebook page, Starnews Nigeria reports that Melaye described the president’s statement as sacrilegious, unconstitutional, dictatorial and with very inhuman tendencies.

Melaye said in the video: “Fellow Countrymen and Women, I am here to address you once again in the course of our Nation’s history. Yesterday, the President made a statement that is sacrilegious, unconstitutional, dictatorial and with very inhuman tendencies. The President said APC Governors should support him to choose his SUCCESSOR.

The President deliberately used the word SUCCESSOR and not Flag-bearer or candidate of the APC. The statement has some negative input and the negative effect is that he wants to impose a President on Nigerians. We are in a democratic government, we will not allow imposition, and we will not allow the president to handle this country as if we are under a monarchical or hereditary system of government. It is sacrilegious, abominable, and undemocratic for the president to talk about a successor in an election that has not been conducted. If he says to support him to get a flag bearer in his party, it would have been a different case.”

Starnews Nigeria reports that the former lawmaker called on the attention of Nigerians to be on alert. He said: “I am calling on the attention of Nigerians to be on alert because the battle to salvage this country from these economic cankerworms and financial scavengers is a battle of No Retreat, No Surrender. And I want to address Mr President, We are ready, more than ever before to defend this democracy even with our blood.”

“We will not allow any imposition, we will not allow rigging, and we will not allow any Anti-Democratic tendency. God Bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
