The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced that fares for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system will rise by 18% starting February 17.
According to LAMATA, the adjustment is necessary due to the rising cost of diesel and the shortage of spare parts, which have kept many buses out of operation.
The agency assured residents that the increase is aimed at maintaining services and ensuring smooth transportation across Lagos.
This is not the first time BRT fares have gone up.
In 2020, Primero Transport Services, a major operator, secured approval for an increment following COVID-19 restrictions that limited passenger capacity.
In 2022, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved a flat N100 fare increase to sustain operations.
Similar adjustments were made during the naira redesign crisis and after fuel subsidies were removed, leading to inflation.
At the time, the Lagos State government reduced fares temporarily as a relief measure.
