Authorities in Iran have carried out a public execution in the southern province of Fars, where a man convicted of murdering a woman and her three children was hanged before a crowd near the scene of the crime.
According to Fars News Agency, the man, whose identity was not immediately released, was found guilty of killing the victims during a violent robbery he carried out alongside his wife. The woman, who was also convicted and sentenced to death, is expected to face execution later inside prison facilities.
Eyewitness reports said the execution was staged at the location of the attack, drawing a significant number of onlookers. Public executions, while legal under Iranian law, remain relatively rare.
Iran has consistently faced criticism from international human rights organizations, which accuse its judiciary of using capital punishment as a tool of repression. The United Nations estimates that more than 1,000 people were executed in Iran in 2024 alone, placing the country among the world’s highest users of the death penalty.
Despite mounting pressure from rights groups, Iranian officials maintain that executions serve as a deterrent to violent crime.
