Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has declared that he takes pleasure in challenging the country’s elite, especially when enforcing laws they often ignore.
Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, Wike dismissed concerns about backlash over his insistence on ground rent payments, stating that powerful individuals who feel above the law will now be held accountable.
Wike criticised sections of the elite for refusing to follow regulations upon returning to Nigeria, despite observing proper systems in more organised societies abroad.
“The era where the big men think they can disobey laws and go free is over,” Wike said. “Something will happen this time.”
The minister’s remarks follow his continued push to recover debts and ensure compliance with land-related obligations in the capital, a move that has unsettled some property owners.
Wike, known for his no-nonsense style, has repeatedly vowed not to be intimidated, saying he enjoys “stepping on the toes” of influential individuals who disregard rules.
His latest comments reaffirm his commitment to strict governance in the Federal Capital Territory and may signal more enforcement measures in the weeks ahead.
